Le Marie Marché in
Zuid-Holland, Nederland
In short
Leiden is Le Marie Marché's tucked-in student-town square: historic, narrow, atmospheric. Our editions take place around old plazas where café murmur mingles with live music and the rustle of wrapping paper. For anyone who wants a morning of wandering between brocante, hand-made craft, French pastry and local makers, Leiden is a good place to begin.
Leiden is the smallest square in our Le Marie Marché family, and for that very reason a favourite. The editions take place around historic squares and streets in the centre, such as the Doezastraat, where café noise mixes with the rustle of wrapping paper and the notes of a chansonnier.
The city is student- and family-friendly, and you see that in the line-up. Young makers with small ateliers, illustrators, vintage trunks, artisanal pastries and delicacies you can take with you for a picnic in the park. Our 5 May edition coincides with Liberation Day, a day when the centre is already in a festive mood and Le Marie Marché adds the French touch.
Come early if you want to browse quietly, or late in the afternoon to end with a glass. The editions are compact but carefully composed, and you can taste that the vendors enjoy standing here themselves.
